I used to work in children's services and do storytime, but I have found that I love teen services even more and I'm planning on becoming a teen librarian when I graduate. You made some fantastic points in your post and I'm saving this to read again in the future. Thank you!! :)Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16888690111872299787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075890361193230583.post-47006921563877575462010-07-27T14:52:44.591-05:002010-07-27T14:52:44.591-05:00Great post! I thought this summer was going to be a little rough, since I just started my position in May, but I have been amazed at the number of teens who have welcomed me and also helped me throughout the summer with my kid's programs. Plus they love that I ask them what programs they want and what books to order. Working at a teen librarian is the best job in the library (in my humble opinion).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075890361193230583.post-31710362271633657032010-07-27T05:17:35.136-05:002010-07-27T05:17:35.136-05:00Thank you so much for that post Sarah and all the ...Thank you so much for that post Sarah and all the help you've given me the last few days :D
I am really looking forward to starting my teen librarian job in September and am going to try to implement some of the suggestion you have given in the post :D
Also looking into a network in the UK.
Thanks again :DYnysawdre Elderly Residents Associationhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08121225687563442558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075890361193230583.post-87608725455825170652010-07-26T13:17:25.469-05:002010-07-26T13:17:25.469-05:00I LOVE being a teen librarian. Many of the books I read are primarily aimed towards girls, so I need to be a bit careful and change it up so I can help out the boys too. Same goes for displays and programs. I had a spa night program over the summer and then I had a bubble rocket program for balance. It's not always easy and I always catching myself being lopsided before changing things up, but it's something that I'm working on fixing.Jennifer Rummel https://www.blogger.com/profile/02326637639055539691noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075890361193230583.post-16148531946559169932010-07-26T12:42:04.357-05:002010-07-26T12:42:04.357-05:00Thank you, thank you, thank you for your post! It really makes me mad and it reflects bad on the profession. I work hard to make sure my teens know that I'm here for them and that I like them!

Sarah-Yep, I agree-if I don't like what I'm doing and I'm not having fun, then what's the point? You have to enjoy your job.

Helen-You list all the reasons why I love my job-the variety, the challenges that come with it and the fact that you never know what each day will hold. This was a great article and I definitely agree with your points, especially about liking the age group. The librarian at our middle school despises kids and whenever I go to talk to her she just seems really irritated and doesn't want to buy books they've asked her for because she doesn't think they are good literature. Being a teen librarian is such a privilege for people who really love to see kids not walk out the doors empty handed. I'm blessed to have enough teens come in that are easily persuaded to check out all my recommendations.Brittanyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18067872282413345969noreply@blogger.com
