Rating: 4/5 Stars
Genre: Adult Contemporary/Chick-Lit
Release Date: March 2005
About the Book: Rachel and Darcy have been best friends since childhood. Darcy gets everything she wants and is always the center of attention. Rachel is the good girl who lets her friend get whatever she wants. Until the night of her 30th birthday when Rachel finds herself in bed with Darcy's fiance.
GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: No, it's not a YA book, but I read it for the 48 Hour Reading Challenge and sometimes I need an adult book. (And yes, my adult books are usually chick lit!)
The thing Emily Giffin does so well is that she takes "the other woman" story and flips it around-you are more sympathetic towards Rachel than Darcy. Darcy comes off as a manipulative friend who only cares about herself. Maybe I could relate to Rachel because I've had a friend like Darcy!
But I cared about Rachel, and even though her relationship with Dex was taboo, I wanted it to work out. I read some reviews that were complaining how they didn't like how the book was about Rachel's affair, which yes, I agree it was annoying that's how the relationship started. But really, you knew that going in to the story, so it's not a big surprise. Plus it helped that I found Darcy so annoying!
I listened to part of this on audiobook and read the other half and it worked as both for me. The narrator of the audiobook captured Rachel's voice perfectly and Emily Giffin's writing was perfect that moving from listening to the book to actually reading it was no problem.
I bought the sequel, Something Blue, right after I finished this one and I've been told by many readers they enjoyed that one even better, so I'm looking forward to reading it. Overall Something Borrowed would make a great vacation/summer read and I'll be checking out Emily Giffin's other titles.

I liked Something Borrowed better than Something Blue but I think it's because in Darcy's story, even at the end, I still didn't find myself liking her that much. I just really related to Rachel, as I too have had friends like Darcy, and it made her story work better for me. But they are both great reads. I like Giffin, though not her last two books quite as much.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to agree with Sarah. I liked Borrowed better than Blue. Borrowed stands the reread test very well, but Blue grows on you. I love them both. Hooray for Darcy, Rachel, and Dex!
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to read these two books. I think Something Borrowed sounds more exciting.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those that thought Something Blue was better than Something Borrowed. I loved watching how Darcy changes in Something Blue.
