I love the marketing behind cover changes from hardcover to paperback. Here are some recent changes I've come across:
Hardcover:

-I like this cover change and I don't like it at the same time. I like how the boys are on the paperback but I also like it's just the raven on the hardcover and I think there's a bit too much on the paperback.

-This is another one that I'm torn on. I like the hardcover because I think it stands out and looks different than other covers out there. But I also think the paperback looks a bit more emotional than the hardcover.

-I really like how the hardcover has a historical feel, but I do like the paperback showing the different narrators.
And this one isn't a hardcover to paperback but instead an English to Spanish translation cover that I thought was interesting:

-I like the different takes on Cinderella in the covers and I love how the second version has a missing shoe.
What do you think? Any other cover changes you've seen lately?
I love the Spanish cover of Cinder! I also like their cover for The Wicked and the Just though it doesn't look as much like a historical fiction book. I think maybe it would appeal to teens more. I like the paperback version of In Darkness more too and I think teens might be more likely to pick it up.

ReplyDeleteI know, I can't explain why I'm distracted by the boys on the cover of The Raven Boys. I think it's because I liked to picture what they look like instead of having them on the cover.

DeleteI think cover comparing is so fascinating. You always have to wonder why they made the changes that they did and if it really helps. I'm with you on most of these, I'm somewhat split. For The Raven Boys I prefer the original, because I agree the new one is just sort of busy. But maybe they wanted to make sure readers knew the book was actually about humans and not... boy birds? haha. In Darkness I sort of prefer the new one, just because I can see it's a POC MC, which I don't get to read often and am intrigued by. I don't know if I necessarily would've realized that just by looking at the original cover. The Wicked and The Just I prefer the original. The two girls on the new one look weirdly photoshopped to me. And I love the original Cinder cover, though the second one is beautiful as well.
ReplyDeleteEek! Beautiful covers are the poison of my existence! I'm just glad I'm not one of those people who buy the same book with different covers. That's when I'll know my addiction has gone too far.

I know what you mean about beautiful covers being poison! I am so drawn to them! I agree with you about In Darkness-the paperback reflects that it has a person of color main character, which I think is important. And maybe they did add the boys to Raven Boys because people thought it was about ravens! :) And no worries about long comments-I love talking books!!
DeleteI think the pb The Raven Boys cover is just too busy with the boys added on :( I also prefer the US version of Cinder-the red is so striking!
ReplyDeleteI agree-I think that's my problem with the paperback too of Raven Boys-it's just too busy. I really do like all of the red in the covers for the Cinder cover and sequels-very striking and catches my eye!
