My Lit Crushes

In honor of Valentines Day (and my upcoming program at work on lit crushes) I thought I'd share my favorite lit crushes. I tried to think about lit crushes from childhood, but I just didn't have any I could think of. I read a lot of Babysitter's Club in elementary school, and while Logan was a great boyfriend, he wasn't someone I crushed on. So most of these are more current.

10. Almonzo Wilder from The Little House Series-This one doesn't make much sense, since I refused to read a series out of order and never got around to reading past reading Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie. But then in middle school I went through this obsession with the TV show and I fell in love with Almonzo. So this was more a TV-fueled crush and thankfully, it was pretty short lived.

9. Laurie from Little Women-I don't think I actually ever finished the book-I got mad every time Jo rejected Laurie-but I adored the movie as a kid. I would get annoyed that Laurie had to go and marry Amy, so I was grateful that the 90's version at least dipped into that storyline more, because the version I watched faithfully as a child had them just randomly showing up at the end married. I still think Jo and Laurie should have gotten married-the Professor wasn't nearly as crush-worthy in my mind.

8. Dave the Laugh from the Georgia Nicolson Series-Robbie is pretty cool and really, Masimo just annoys me. Out of Georgia's boyfriends, Dave the Laugh is my favorite. He's totally the type of guy I would have fallen for in high school.

7. Finn from Something, Maybe-Elizabeth Scott writes very crush-worthy boys, but right now Finn takes the top spot. He's funny and sweet and he's got a snarky side. He's so good to Hannah and every scene with him in it made me swoon.

6. Calvin from A Wrinkle In Time-This is one I don't think I realized at the time, but came to me while I was making this list. I really enjoyed this book as a kid-I related to shy awkward Meg Murray who was moody and protective of her younger siblings. Meg and Claudia from From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler competed as my favorite lit characters of my late elementary/early middle school years. Calvin went on an adventure with Meg and Charles Wallace, he was brave, and he loved Meg, even though she was shy and smart. I think Meg and Calvin gave me hope for my future love life.

5. Alex from Roswell High-I LOVED this series as a teen-this was a series my friends and I would rush to the bookstore and grab each book on it's release day. Max and Michael were great too, but a little angsty for me and I had a soft spot for Alex. He put up with all of Isabel's annoying traits and still loved her. I was very upset when they made his character small in the TV series.

4. Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter Series-I can't really explain this one, but I just love Ron! I love his family, so maybe that's secretly where my love stems from. I also have to cheer for him because he's the underdog-Harry gets everything and Ron is the sidekick, but I think he's also more fun. My husband had me convinced before HP6 was released that Ron was going to die-I would get so mad arguing with him, I'd almost be in tears! So yeah, I love Ron. I also love Fred and George and really, I think I might take Bill or Charlie just to be part of the family! (And yes, I would pass on Percy-he's too political and he reminds of the suck ups I went to school with who were annoying. I just don't think I could deal with him.)

3. Po from Graceling-Po is one hot lit boy! He supports Katsa, he cares about his family, he can fight yet he's not afraid to have fun. I think Po and Katsa have the best lit relationship ever created. I love the fact that they develop a strong friendship first and it's not a "love at first sight/we're destined to be together" thing. Plus, they have a great banter that makes me fall in love.

2. Peeta from The Hunger Games-Oh yes, I'm totally Team Peeta!! One, he has loved Katniss for so long and makes sure she's taken care of, even before the games threw them together. He's also brave and strong, but has a soft side and he can be very thoughtful and sweet. If Katniss doesn't want him in the end, I'll take Peeta! (Note: My husband is arguing with my list now, saying Gale is more crush-worthy.)

1. Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables-I think Gilbert was my first lit crush, and he still remains at the top. I watched the movie version of Anne over Thanksgiving with my mother-in-law, cousin-in-law, and brother-in-law's girlfriend and I think they all thought I was a little silly for swooning over Gil! But how can you not?? From the moment he calls Anne "carrots" you know they're meant to be together. He does so much for Anne and never knocks her dreams. Plus, he puts up with her stubbornness and he's not afraid to tell her what he thinks. I can't help but love him and he holds a place in my heart for being my first lit crush.

What lit boys do you crush on?

Comments

  1. Gilbert was one of my earlier lit crushes. More so after the movie :)

Right now it's Valek from Study Series by Maria Snyder. I think he is romantic and swoon worthy with out even saying any romantic dialogues.

I would also add Po .. As you said the gradual development in their relationship helps us like him more.

  2. Oh Gilbert, yeah he definitely tops my list too. That carrot comment! My books copies are all opened to scenes of Anne and Gilbert, though I do love the entire series. :D My favorite Elizabeth Scott boy is Will from Perfect You though Finn was pretty darn cute too.

  3. I crush on Peeta too. One of my big crushes is Jace from The Mortal Instruments Series. :)

  4. My husband agrees with me that Peeta is the right choice. When he read the books, he was like "Who would like Gale? I don't get it." LOL

  5. I completely agree with Peeta and Dave the Laugh and I have to add Dimitri from the Vampire Academy series, Jace from The Mortal Instruments and Shane from The Morganville Vampires series.

    And so many more!

  6. Haha at Dave the Laugh! Nich from Need and of course, Edward Cullen ;) Lol :P

  7. YES! Gilbert is my all time biggest lit crush as well. You just know they're meant for eachother.

    Awesome list. :)

  8. Definitely Shane from Morganville, Absolutely Valek from Study, and also Ian from The Host by Stephenie Meyer...yum.

  9. Dave The Laugh! Finn!
You read my mind, you really did. :]

  10. I would have to say that my all-time favorite lit crush is Wes, from The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen. Sa-woooon!

  11. I really liked Draco in Harry Potter...not necessarily to date, but he kind of cracked me up. I did like Ron though b/c he was funny but a little too hot-headed for me. One of the twins maybe!!

A lit crush from grade school though was Ponyboy and Soda from The Outsiders...Johnny too a bit b/c you just want to take care of him.

  12. I LOVE Gilbert Blythe! He's always been my #1 too! :) I giggled at the Almonzo b/c I thought he was a doll in the series too. I don't remember much about him in the books, but I thought he was great in the TV show. I'm also Team Peeta (I'm not reading book 2 until the week book 3 comes out ... because cliffhangers turn me into a spaz ... I'm lame :).

  13. I did a post like this last year. Gilbert was on mine also! Here are my others.

  14. I totally agree about Laurie and Jo. That's probably one of the greatest literary disappointments of all time. I love Laurie.

I also really like Calvin. He's a great fit for Meg.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wouldn't know where to start compiling a list of crushes. I have too many to name. LOL! All of the books my crushed were dreamed up in, I've read at least 3 times.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh Man! Po from Graceling totally agree with you there girl!

For me, Basically any lead male in anything Austen!

In the Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon - major crush on Cadvan!

I agree with Laurie too! I couldn't believe she didn't want to marry him.. but I am in LOVE with Christian Bale and he was the one that played Laurie so maybe I was biased!

  17. Oh, I so agree with Alex from Roswell High...and Michael--I loved that series! I'll also have to add Stefan from The Vampire Diaries, Rob and Gabriel from the Dark Visions Trilogy (both by L.J. Smith), Anthony from the Fingerprints series (Melinda Metz), Chip from Looking for Alaska (John Green) and Rob from the 1-800-Where-R-You series (Meg Cabot). What can I say, I'm a bit book obsessed. :)

  18. Mine was Troy from V.C. Andrews' Dark Angel. I read that book so many times in my teen years because of him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with you about Laurie. I watched the movie before I read the book and I remember being so irritated that Jo turned him down. That was the first Christian Bale movie I saw and I thought Gabriel Byrne as the professor just looked too old and serious for Jo. Gilbert Blythe was a favorite literary crush of mine as well. As a teen I also liked Stefan from Vampire Diaries.

Current lit crushes include Colonel Brandon from Sense and Sensibility, Faramir from Lord of the Rings, and Remus Lupin from the Harry Potter series.

  20. Alex *was* the best Roswell High love interest. I could never forgive Isabel for being all Nikolas obsessed and for the WB for making Alex so minor in the series. (Also cause I think Colin Hanks was so nerdy cute.)

And because I can't resist...Team Peeta all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Peeta is the best of the best! I'm in total agreement with you on his inclusion :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Almanzo Wilder is SO crush-worthy in The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, and These Happy Golden Years. You should read those books when you get the chance. I didn't like the earlier books in the series as much (though I really think I should fully read the entire series before I judge it too much). And GILBERT wheeeeeeeee!! And I actually just got finished watching Little Women for the first time ever. Meh. The Laurie I pictured in my mind was a TON cuter and more crush-worthy. None of this Christian Bale crooked-teeth floppy-haired-ness. :)

Mind if I perhaps borrow this idea from you...? :P

    ReplyDelete
  23. My crushes are Mr. Darcy, Mr. Knightley, and Gilbert Blythe. =) There are a few others, but those are the major ones.

I actually didn't think Jo and Laurie should have ended up together. I guess because she didn't really love him like that...maybe she would have eventually. But I don't think she would have been happy married to him.

  24. I'm so glad you included Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time. He was one of my earliest literary crushes. I was so happy to see they got married in the end. :)

  25. Wow...thats awesome...uhhhh...well, I think I'd have to say Sam from Maggie Stiefvaters' 'Shiver' and Fang from the 'Maximum Ride' series by James Patterson...oh, and Gil was always a given ;D

  26. Ron! I'm so happy you got him on your list, he is totally adorable, so funny and so REAL!
    Jacob, from Twilight, [ditto].
Michael Moscovitz- from Princess Diaries. He is drool worthy. Hot, and Smart, and hes done so much for Mia! I love him.
Also Adrian, from Beastly, hes amazing and I fell in love with him.
    And yes, Peeta was amazing.

God, book crushes are so much better than real ones.

  28. I definitely agree with the Gilbert crush! I had a huge crush on Adam in the Madeleine L'Engle book - A Ring of Endless Light when I was in high school.

  29. Definitely agree on Gilbert and Laurie. Love them. For some reason, I had a slight crush on Percy in the beginning Harry Potter books. I got over that quickly. And sorry, I have to agree with your husband that Gale is slightly more crush-worthy than Peeta. I know I'm in the minority on that one.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'm totally with you on the Po and Peeta love. But I can't believe in 30 comments that no one has mentioned the single most crush-worthy character in YA lit? I am speaking, of course, of Gen of Megan Whalen Turner's Attolia books. Can't WAIT for Conspiracy of Kings.

  31. i love the fact that U included Alex from the Roswell High series in Ur list. i loved the show 2 & hated when they cancelled it. i think that the books were very underrated & deserve way more praise.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i would add Sam & Ed from the Fearless series by Francine Pascal 2 the list. i could never really pick only 1 tho. They were both very crush-worthy but 4 different reasons.

  33. Hear Hear! Great list!
ALthough I do say I have a crush on Jace from the mortal intsruments...

And you think that books sounds like it would be right up your alley, but you're in a reading slump and you're afraid to give it a try unless it fails? I knew Eleanor and Park sounded like my perfect book, but I was in such an after committee slump that I even though I knew this book would help, I just didn't want to be disappointed. I should have known better because Eleanor and Park was perfect and everything that I had hoped it wou

Post Downton Abbey Reading List

Downton Abbey is over (with a shocking and frustrating ending!) and now I'm suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal. I've got a reading list full of books that I hope will satisfy my post-Downton Abbey cravings and I thought I'd share what's in my pile and get suggestions for other after Downton reads. Here's what I hope to be reading this year (a mix of YA and adult titles):                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  A couple Julian Fellowes reads:                And a few re-reads:                    Edited to add: What's on your Post-Downton Abbey reading list?
