Tween Tuesday: Deadweather and Sunrise by Geoff Rodkey

Rating: 3/5 Stars

Genre: Historical/Adventure

Release Date: 5/29/2012

About the Book: Egg lives on the island of Deadweather-and his family are the only non-pirates on the island. His siblings are always giving him a hard time and his dad is occupied with the ugly fruit plantation. When his father rushes the family away for a sudden trip to Sunrise Island, Egg isn’t sure what is going on-but he knows it’s something big. The family soon meets the rich and fancy Pembroke family and their beautiful and witty daughter Millicent. But when Egg’s family disappears in a hot air balloon accident and someone tries to push Egg off a cliff, Egg is on the run-because someone wants him dead and he’s not sure why.

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: Deadweather and Sunrise is the first in a new series, The Chronicles of Egg. The Chronicles of Egg reminds me of Lemony Snickett with pirates. And not Disney-nice pirates. Pirates that are gruff and steal and fight and on the lookout for treasure.

Egg is a great narrator who tells a good story. While the action took awhile to get started, readers who are wanting an adventure story will stick with it and be rewarded. The first part of the book covers what is already mentioned on the jacket flap, but even though I knew what was going to happen, I was still interested in the story. As Egg's adventures continue, the story does pick up pace and become more adventurous and action packed. Egg’s companions are a pirate named Guts and Millicent (who Egg has a bit of a crush on) and they add a nice element of humor and hilarity to the story.  I’m interested in listening to it on audiobook as well because I think the pirate speak would be very fun to listen to!

This is a good choice for older tweens looking for an adventure story like Percy Jackson or terrible misadventures like Lemony Snickett. It also makes a good booklist pick for summer reading if you’re doing the Dig Into Reading theme!

  2. Agreed - Deadweather and Sunrise sounds like a lot of fun. I liked the cover right away. It actually sounded something like a MG version of Ship Breaker to me!

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

When new girl Eleanor sits next to Park on the bus, they don't want anything to do with each other. But over the course of the school year, things change. It starts with comic books and becomes a friendship and a romance that the two will never forget. You never forget your first love. GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: Have you ever had a book sit on your shelf that you've heard so much hype about? And you think that books sounds like it would be right up your alley, but you're in a reading slump and you're afraid to give it a try unless it fails? I knew Eleanor and Park sounded like my perfect book, but I was in such an after committee slump that I even though I knew this book would help, I just didn't want to be disappointed. I should have known better because Eleanor and Park was perfect and everything that I had hoped it wou

Post Downton Abbey Reading List

Downton Abbey is over (with a shocking and frustrating ending!) and now I'm suffering Downton Abbey withdrawal. I've got a reading list full of books that I hope will satisfy my post-Downton Abbey cravings and I thought I'd share what's in my pile and get suggestions for other after Downton reads. Here's what I hope to be reading this year (a mix of YA and adult titles):                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  A couple Julian Fellowes reads:                And a few re-reads:                    Edited to add: What's on your Post-Downton Abbey reading list?
