Sucks to Be Me by Kimberly Pauley

Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton Teen Vampire, (Maybe)
Rating: 4 Stars

Genre: Contemporary/Paranormal

Release Date: August 28, 2008

About the Book: Mina's parents are vampires, only she's not supposed to know that. It's not like she'd say anything. Plus, they're really pretty normal and all those stories you hear about vampires are so untrue. But now the vampire council (yep, there's a council) wants Mina to decide if she's going to become a vampire or not. She even has to take classes and learn about vampire culture. How's a girl supposed to deal with vampires and high school?

GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: With all the vampire books out there, I found Sucks to Be Me to be such a refreshing change of pace! Mina is a normal girl with normal issues and even though her parents are vampires, they're just like any parent. There was a lot of humor, which I also enjoyed and I loved how author Kimberly Pauley took every vampire myth and turned it around. Because of the normal high school student vibe in the book, I would recommend this to readers who might typically shy away from paranormal or vampire stories. I was excited to read on the author's website that she's working on a sequel!

  1. This book sounds really unique! To be vampire or not to be - what an unusual question for a teen to answer! I want to see how the vampire myths are turned around!

    Thanks for the review :)

  2. Thanks for the review. It sounds really good by I am cautious because I think I might be on vampire overload. Vampires are definitely the new black and vampire books are everywhere. Maybe I will put it down at the bottom of the TBR pile and come back to it when I have taken a break from vampires.

  5. From your description it looks like it would be funny. It also reminded me of the old Teenwolf movie with Michael J. Fox. I normally shy away from the intense paranormal/vampire books, so this one sounds like it might be something I would enjoy.

  6. Cecilia-I really liked how the author changed things around and made vampires so realistic.

Erika Lynn-There totally is a vampire overload right now. I have to read one and then take a break and not read any vampire stuff for several books. I hope you get a chance to read it!

Bookworm-I'm glad you liked it! I hope the sequel comes out soon, but from what I read, it's still being written...sigh..I'll have to wait a little longer.

Steph Su-I hope you get a chance to check it out!

    Alyce-
I hadn't thought about it being like Teenwolf, but it kind of is! I love Michael J. Fox-he was one of my first Hollywood crushes. :)

  7. It looks like the vampire market is about to fizzle out. How many series are out right now, like 14? (It was 14 last time I checked, but the number keeps going up.)
Good thing my as of yet to be revised novel doesn't even have the word vampire in it.
Time to start a new trend.

  10. I absolutely loved this book!!!! I want the sequel now! My favorite part was the ending, but this whole book was fun. I loved the misconception/truths about vampires thing at the beginning of each chapter.

  11. This sounds like a nice, non-angsty look at being a vampire. Fun!

13 District Mockingjay Tour: District 4

Hello and welcome to District Four. I'm sorry that Finnick isn't here to be your host. I know as a member of District Four I should be cheering for my own tribute, but after watching the last two Hunger Games play out I have fallen in love with Peeta Mellark! Why do I love Peeta? He's smart, he's funny, and he's charming. He stands up for what he believes, he's loyal and he's not afraid to do what's right. He's sensitive and caring but can also be strong and kick butt. He fights for Katniss and with Katniss. Peeta is a great diplomat and he knows how to bring people together. He can also be sneaky to get what he wants. Plus, did I mention he can bake? And he's hot!! But it's not just me! We have an underground club of sorts here in District Four-Seafaring Librarians for Peeta! Here's what some of our members had to say about their love for Peeta: - Team Peeta!! I love their relationship because they balance each other perfectly. Where ...
